How to create and print a DataMatrix barcode

DataMatrix is a compact 2D symbology suited to small items and industrial traceability where an imaging scanner is available.

Where DataMatrix fits

  • Electronic and mechanical parts
  • Laboratory sample identification
  • Compact manufacturing traceability marks
  1. 1

    Enter valid DataMatrix data

Encode only the identifier or structured payload required by the downstream system. If a regulated workflow requires GS1 DataMatrix, a plain DataMatrix value is not automatically equivalent.

  2. 2

    Confirm checks and encoding rules

ECC 200 error correction is built into DataMatrix. Any business-identifier check digit, such as a GTIN check digit, remains part of the data and must be valid separately.

  3. 3

Print at final size and scan-test

Preserve square cells, the solid L-shaped finder pattern and the surrounding quiet zone. SVG is preferable when the mark will be resized. A 2D imaging scanner is required; a laser-only 1D scanner cannot read DataMatrix. Test the final mark size and surface finish.

Frequently asked questions

What data can DataMatrix encode?

Encode only the identifier or structured payload required by the downstream system. If a regulated workflow requires GS1 DataMatrix, a plain DataMatrix value is not automatically equivalent.

How does DataMatrix handle check digits?

ECC 200 error correction is built into DataMatrix. Any business-identifier check digit, such as a GTIN check digit, remains part of the data and must be valid separately.

When should I not use DataMatrix?

Do not assume every customer or warehouse can read DataMatrix; confirm scanner and software support before rollout.

Does standard barcode generation use AI credits?

No. Standard barcode creation, preview, printing and export do not consume AI credits.
