ZPL and TSPL are printer command languages, not interchangeable image formats. The correct export is determined by the firmware documented for the target thermal printer.

When to use ZPL

ZPL (Zebra Programming Language) is used by Zebra printers and other models that explicitly advertise ZPL compatibility. A label file describes the media setup, coordinates, text, barcodes and print quantity as commands that the printer renders.

When to use TSPL

TSPL or TSPL2 is associated with TSC printers and compatible hardware. Its commands use different syntax for label size, gap, position, barcode and text. A TSPL-capable printer does not automatically understand ZPL, even if the two previews look identical.

Always check the printer manual or emulation setting. Some models can switch command-language emulation, while others support only one family.

Physical dimensions and DPI still matter

Printer commands place objects in dots. At 203 DPI, one millimetre is about 8 dots; at 300 DPI, it is about 11.81 dots. The exporter must use the same DPI configured for the printer. A file designed for the wrong DPI can print at the wrong size or move layers outside the label.

In Packaging Label Studio, set the physical width, height and printer DPI before exporting ZPL or TSPL. Keep all layers inside the label and reserve enough quiet space for the barcode.

Variable data workflow

For multiple SKUs, import CSV or Excel, map the columns to barcode and text layers, and preview representative rows. Check the longest product name, highest price, longest batch number and densest barcode. A layout that works for the first row may overflow later.

Safe production test

  1. Confirm the printer's supported language and DPI.
  2. Confirm label width, height, gap or black-mark settings.
  3. Send one label, not the complete batch.
  4. Measure the printed result and scan it with the production device.
  5. Only then increase the print quantity.

Use PDF or PNG when a human needs a proof. Use ZPL or TSPL when the target printer supports the command language and the workflow needs direct, repeatable thermal output. If unsure, see the concise ZPL vs TSPL answer.
