How to create and print a EAN-8 barcode

EAN-8 is a compact retail identifier for small packages when an assigned GTIN-8 is appropriate; it is not simply a shortened EAN-13.

Where EAN-8 fits

  • Small consumer packages
  • GTIN-8 retail items
  • Point-of-sale labels with limited width
  1. 1

    Enter valid EAN-8 data

Enter seven digits to calculate the check digit or all eight digits for a complete assigned GTIN-8. Preserve leading zeroes.

  2. 2

    Confirm checks and encoding rules

The eighth digit is mandatory and calculated from the first seven. A valid check digit does not prove that the GTIN-8 was assigned to your product.

  3. 3

Print at final size and scan-test

EAN-8 saves horizontal space, but its guard bars and quiet zones still must remain intact at the final package size. Verify the decoded eight digits against the item database on the same POS scanners used in stores.

How does EAN-8 handle check digits?

The eighth digit is mandatory and calculated from the first seven. A valid check digit does not prove that the GTIN-8 was assigned to your product.

When should I not use EAN-8?

Do not compress an existing EAN-13 into EAN-8. GTIN-8 allocation follows GS1 rules and availability.
