Production guide

How to create and print a GS1-128 barcode

GS1-128 uses Code 128 with GS1 application identifiers and FNC1 separators to carry multiple supply-chain data elements in one symbol.

Where GS1-128 fits

  • GTIN plus lot or batch number
  • Expiry and production-date labels
  • Cases, pallets and logistics units
  1. 1

    Enter valid GS1-128 data

Use valid GS1 application identifiers, for example (01) for GTIN and (10) for lot. Variable-length fields require the correct separator when another element follows.

  2. 2

    Confirm checks and encoding rules

The Code 128 symbol checksum is automatic, while data elements such as GTIN retain their own GS1 check digits. Both layers must be valid.

  3. 3

Print at final size and scan-test

Long AI strings can produce wide symbols. Use an appropriate label width and verify module width at the final printer DPI. Verify that the scanner transmits FNC1 as the expected group separator and that the receiving software parses each AI into the correct field.

Frequently asked questions

What data can GS1-128 encode?

Use valid GS1 application identifiers, for example (01) for GTIN and (10) for lot. Variable-length fields require the correct separator when another element follows.

How does GS1-128 handle check digits?

The Code 128 symbol checksum is automatic, while data elements such as GTIN retain their own GS1 check digits. Both layers must be valid.

When should I not use GS1-128?

Parentheses are a human-readable AI notation, not ordinary data characters. A value that merely looks like (01)... is not valid GS1 data unless every field follows GS1 rules.

Does standard barcode generation use AI credits?

No. Standard barcode creation, preview, printing and export do not consume AI credits.
